Mystery Maths Meetings
Mystery Maths started in November 2011. It is anticipated that meetings will take place every month and will tour around the Christleton High School partner primary schools. The mystery theme is only revealed on the day!
February 2012
On 23rd February, the Mystery Maths Group visited Oldfield Primary School.
Pupils started by investigating the area and circumference of a circle by measuring and dissecting paper cirdcles. They then discussed how to calculate a percentage of an amount.
Best answer of the day:
How do you work out 36.5%?
Divide by 200 and multiply by twice the percentage.
This may sound a strange way, but it actually means you never have to multiply by a decimal. This demonstrates excellent arithmetic skills.
Oldfield Primary School have been looking at Global Issues. We contributed to this theme by creating a World Population Information Diagram. A big blue circle represented the population of the world – each group picked a country and calculated the area of a circle to represent it’s population in proportion to the world. For example: 19% of the world population live in China, so they had to create a circle with an area equal to 19% of the blue circle. The capital city of each country and the proportion of the population who lived there was also given. They created a circle to represent this too.
They created an amazing wall display which was taken back to Christleton High School. The members of the Christleton High School Community were been very impressed by the pupils work. Thank you to Oldfield Primary School for hosting and to Mr Cunnington (Oldfield) and Mrs Davies (CHS) for assisting.
