Christleton High School Vegetable Garden Project
As part of the Eco School Award, students and staff within CHS are keen to start up a gardening club and establish a vegetable garden right at the heart of the school. It is hoped that the vegetable garden will be a 'beacon of learning' which will help students to learn in a practical way about all aspects of growing vegetables. The photos on the right are regularly updated to show how things are progressing.
Congratulations to Alana Williams 7By2, winner of the vegetable garden design competition.
Aspects of Alana's design will be used when developing the garden over the coming weeks. Our thanks go to the Site Team for building the raised beds for the plot, and to the students who designed and carved stone sculpture blocks for the finished garden.
Mission Statement:
As part of the Eco School Award, students and staff within CHS are keen to start up a gardening club and establish a vegetable garden. The project’s aims are:
• To develop the general interest of students in gardening and healthy eating by looking at growing their own herbs and vegetables.
• To get students practically involved in the growing and running of the garden.
• To promote learning outdoors as well as enhancing cross-curricular links.
• To turn a drab, little used, grass area within the heart of our school building into a place of tranquil, respite and pleasure for all staff and students to share and enjoy.
• To facilitate students with the opportunity to develop a project where they can be involved with the design and implementation process, which would encourage enthusiasm and dedication to the ‘green cause’ to flourish.
• To allow students to develop their confidence and to help them understand the concept of taking responsibility for the growth of vegetables.
• To allow students to learn skills that will be most important to them in the work force, such as research and design, self management, team working skills, creativity, forecast planning, and budget management.
• To foster links with our local primary school and community – to provide a real life resource to be utilised for the further development of environment and enterprise understanding.
• To build links with the enterprise department to provide students with a real life resource for them to develop their enterprise understanding; sourcing materials, budgeting, marketing, team work and leadership.
It is our wish that the entire school community will benefit from an area that is now unused and uninspiring, to one which will be a picture of colour, an atmosphere of gentleness and an environment where we can all go and sit, think and relax.
