EXPEDITION TO THE ATLAS MOUNTAINS, MOROCCO – SUMMER 2011

During the summer, 27 sixth form students and 8 staff journeyed to the Western Atlas Mountains in Morocco to trek and to work on a community project.  The village of Tazoudot, high in the mountains, has had a problem with irrigating their fields and when the river floods the irrigation ditches get washed away. Our project was to raise funds to help them overcome this by building a dam and concrete channels for the water.

Over the last 18 months, the students had raised more than £3000 for this, which went towards equipment and materials which had to be shipped in via a dirt track so they would be there when we arrived.  They then spent two days in and out of the river, moving boulders to reinforce and enlarge the route of the mini canal and were able to see the first stages of the concreting completed before their time in the village ended and they started their trek.

Not only did they work hard on this, but they also found time to entertain and play games with the children from the village who were absolutely fascinated. The students then trekked and camped in some of the most remote areas of the mountains, climbing to over 3300 metres and in temperatures of 40 degrees with very little shade! Fortunately, there were cold mountain streams to dip into to cool off every now and then.
