English
English at Christleton High School is vibrant, varied and valuable. We aim to develop the potential of all students to be confident communicators, independent thinkers and critical readers.
At Key Stage 3, students follow the National Curriculum and can expect to cover a range of reading, writing and speaking and listening activities. Assessment of pupil performance (APP) tasks are used, along with ongoing work, to track progress and achievement. Enrichment activities include in-house and Rotary poetry competitions, theatre trips, Readathon (which last year included a balloon launch and book sale, raising £1583), and a Gifted and Talented trip to the Lake District to study Wordsworth.
At Key Stage 4, students follow the WJEC syllabus, leading to a GCSE in both English Language and English Literature. Students will study a range of fiction and non-fiction texts from a range of periods; they will analyse how written and spoken language is used in everyday life, and produce a range of writing styles for themselves. Students are assessed through exam and controlled assessment, completed under supervision. Enrichment activities include theatre trips, Rotary public speaking competitions, book clubs and visiting authors.
At Key Stage 5, we offer AQA English Language and AQA English Literature. Always extremely popular and successful, the courses prepare students for higher education; many go on to study English at a range of universities, including Oxbridge.
