Modern Foreign Languages
Bienvenue à la section langues!
Of course you all know that means “Welcome to the Languages department!”
Here at Christleton we have a thriving department which still offers three languages at GCSE and A Level; French, German and Spanish.
In years 7 - 9 all students study French; in year 7 for 2 hours per week, in year 8 for 2½ hours per week, and in year 9 for 2 hours per week. In year 9, students can opt to take a second language, Spanish or German, in addition to their French.
Topics studied at Key Stage 3 include personal information such as family, friends, hobbies and food. During year 9 students begin studying for GCSE with a view to entering the exam early if appropriate. During year 8 students have the opportunity to go to France for 5 days with the department (see the photographs to the right).
All languages are now optional at Key Stage 4 (years 10 & 11), however more than half the year group at Christleton usually opt for at least one GCSE in a language, and some students do two. The topics we study are similar to those at Key Stage 3 but in greater detail and at a higher level. For example, the topic of food is still studied, but there is more focus on lifestyles and the impact of a healthy diet.
At A Level we offer French, German and Spanish at AS with most students opting to continue at A2. Many of our students take a language in addition to a more scientific base of subjects in order to give their studies an added dimension.
